There are commercials currently running for a tax preparation service whose tag line is "I’ve got people". I get tickled every time I see these commercials because I know first hand who "these people" are because I almost became one of "those people".
I earned dual majors in college; marketing and transportation & distribution (now called supply-chain management). After several years of owning my own logistic company, I moved into a career in financial management. After holding several CFO positions, it became evident to me that I needed to be a certified public accountant in order to move up in my career. This is why I returned to college to earn the hours necessary to sit for the CPA exam (which I passed on my first attempt).
My wife and I decided that it would be best if I attend school full-time for one semester to knock the hours out. So I left my job as the financial manager of an equipment rental company in August of that year to attend school. Before leaving my full-time job, a local CPA firm had offered me a seasonal staff accounting position during tax season. So I left my full-time job knowing I had a job lined up in January where I’d be generating an income for my family.
In November, the CPA firm informed me that there wouldn’t be a position for me during tax season. I had been friends with this CPA firm for many years and I understood why the offer was being retracted. So I began to search for other opportunities to earn income during tax season.
All of the CPA firms I talked to had already hired their seasonal staff. But I discovered that the large tax preparation services had openings for tax preparers. I talked to all of these firms and settled on the one that seemed to have the most small business clients who needed business tax returns prepared.
In my next post I tell you about my experience with this tax preparation service.
